What is a Sakura Mori?
In Japan, people who look after cherry trees in parks and other places throughout the year are called Sakura Mori (literally, protectors of cherry blossoms). You can do this in Pittsburgh too!
The Pittsburgh Sakura Project is looking for volunteers to help care for and protect the cherry blossoms.

Recruiting for Upcoming Work Sessions
Registration for 2025 Fall Planting Day (Saturday, 11/1/2025, from 10 am) is here.
Date of next work session: Saturday 11/8/2025, from 10 am, for about 2 hours (Other fall dates Saturdays 11/15, 11/22, and 11/29, all from 10 am to ~noon.
Place: North Park, meet at our toolshed across from the Tennis Courts (see Maps)
Work Content: In November: assisting with the careful pruning of diseased branches to remove Black Knot fungus. There are many ways to help besides actual pruning, such as cleaning the pruners between each cut, and collecting and bagging the cuttings to make sure the Black Knot spores do not spread.
Registration: [By Google Form: ] The registration form refers to a waiver, but there is no waiver. By waiver, it simply means that you agree to the accept the terms and rules of the Volunteer Handbook. You may also follow the instructions in the Volunteer Handbook to register the old-fashioned way, by sending an email to sakurapghboard@gmail.com. In your email please state that you have read the Volunteer Handbook and agree to its rules.

Volunteer recruitment for work sessions in winter: December, January, and February

*Reinstallation of deer-proof fence
*Start of reinstallation of ID of cherry tree species and planting year

* Weeding and mulching if time and weather allows

Please prepare winter clothes, non-slip shoes, winter gloves, etc.

Volunteer recruitment for work sessions in spring: March, April, and May
Content:
* Weed removal, mulching, reinstallation of deer-proof fence
* ID of cherry tree species and planting year, and start of reinstallation
Date: March 23rd and 30th, both Sundays, from 10:00 am for about 2 hours
Meet at our equipment shed, opposite the tennis courts.
Work will be canceled in bad weather. If you are not sure whether the work will be carried out or canceled, text 412-600-2181.
Each person should wear appropriate clothing for the work, and non-slip shoes.
Volunteer recruitment for work sessions in June, July, and August during the summer months

*Watering as needed, reinstalling deer fences, weeding, mulching
Date:, from 9:00 am for about 2 hours
Meet at our equipment shed, opposite the tennis courts.
