Since 2009, we have planted 10 varieties of cherry trees. We plan to continue planting a variety of cherry trees at our site in North Park. It costs about $800 to have a young cherry tree planted by a professional, and about $400 to have the tree planted by PSP volunteers at our fall planting day. This figure includes the tree, mulch, tools, and future tree care costs.
Tree planting takes place on the first Saturday of November every year. Besides general donations, we accept donations to cover specific tree plantings such as memorial trees for loved ones, or as commemorative trees to honor people or occasions such as weddings, school entrances, and graduations. If you are interested in having a tree planted in someone's memory or as a commemoration, please contact us by email (sakurapghboard@gmail.com) to check on availability and to discuss arrangements. Generally, we request a minimum donation of $400 to cover costs.
For donors of memorial and commemorative trees: please note that once the tree is planted in North Park, the tree belongs to Allegheny County's North Park. Therefore, names or plaques cannot be placed on or near the tree. However, you can visit and view the tree any time you like. If you want to care for a tree that you had planted, please become a volunteer with our tree maintenance program. Private individuals are not allowed to care for the trees on their own.

"Here are some 2025 photos I took in North Park of your beautiful cherry trees. Thank you for all your hard work to create this glory in the park. I'm grateful."
"I planted a cherry tree at my home and enjoyed the beautiful flowers every year, but due to a change in lifestyle, I had to leave the house I had lived in for many years. I felt sad that the cherry tree would belong to someone else. A few years ago, I learned about the work of the Pittsburgh Sakura Project and planted a memorial tree for a loved one. I enjoy the cherry blossoms every year in North Park, and even if I leave Pittsburgh in the future, I feel reassured knowing that I can always see them when I return."
"I lost someone I love. The whole family planted a memorial tree."
"It's a joy to capture images of these Cherry Blossom Trees. It's something I look forward to each year."
"I planted a tree to commemorate my daughter's graduation. With gratitude for her hard work so far..."
