Persia has a long history of studying and practicing the medicine in medical teaching systems such as Gundeshapur center. According to evidences (historical and modern literature), several neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders were known and even neurosurgical techniques were widely practiced in ancient and medieval Persia. The current project focuses on the medieval concept of Neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. Accordingly, main approaches to diagnose and treatment of these disorders in traditional Persian medicine are considered. In this weblog, we are interested to introduce the ancient and medieval Persian neuroscientists and particularly their approaches to diagnose and treatment of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. For instance, it is little known about the life and influence of Akhawayni (Medieval Persian neuroscientist) in neuroscience who had unique teachings on sleep paralysis and treatment approaches of sleep paralysis. In Akhawayni’s book there is interesting infromation about sleep paralysis during the Middle Ages in Persia. As a result, it is very useful to know ancient and medieval Persian neuroscience pioneers, if we want to know the routes of the modern life neuroscience.
In this project the literature review of the traditional and modern evidences and manuscripts will be done. Finally, all the evidences (such as pictures or texts) together with written information and all references will be published in this weblog. I am still collecting new information and in near future there will be more original photos and documents which will be added to the blog section.
