January: New Crowdfunding Campaign: Supporting Mitchell Syndrome Research
We are thrilled to announce the launch of a new crowdfunding campaign dedicated to advancing our research into Mitchell Syndrome.
After the success of the first initiative by Play Granada, this initiative constitutes a permanent way of supporting research on Mitchell Syndrome. As many of you know, Mitchell Syndrome is an ultra-rare condition that requires urgent and dedicated scientific effort to better understand its mechanisms and develop effective therapies. This initiative, supported by the University of Granada (UGR), aims to raise essential funds to support the personnel and resources needed to continue this vital work at PerBioMetLab.
How You Can Help
Every contribution brings us one step closer to finding answers for patients and their families. You can support our project by direct online donation. You can make a secure donation directly through the UGR fundraising platform. > Donate here: Mitchell Syndrome Project
If you encounter any issues during the donation process or have questions about how to contribute, please do not hesitate to reach out to our team.
Thank you for your generosity and for supporting science!

November: New research project on Mitchell Syndrome. Sometimes science meets life in unexpected ways. During a Covirán Granada basketball match, we learned about Dani, a patient with Mitchell Syndrome, an ultra-rare peroxisomal disorder caused by ACOX1 gain-of-function mutation. We connected with his family and are thrilled to announce the start of a research project to tackle this condition. A charity dinner organized by Play Granada will raise the first funds for this initiative.

September: We are back to business. We started the academic course with the SEBBM meeting. The PI, Pablo Ranea Robles, presented in the Metabolism Regulation and Nutrition group his research as a postdoc at the CBMR in Copenhagen.
September: Yolanda and Pablo participated for the first time in "Noche Europea de los Investigadores" explaining fat metabolism. Looking forward to repeating next year!
July: Kimberly Gallegos defended her master thesis with honors! Congratulations Kimberly and all the best for your next step in your career.
July: Social activity! The peroxisome lab gathered together for a fun hike near Granada. We hiked "Ruta de los Bolos". Thanks to the melting snow in Sierra Nevada, it was full of water, cooling the sweltering heat of Granada. We said goodbye to this academic course with a lunch after the hike :). A toast for a new and exciting year starting in September.
June: Fellowship announcement!. Julia Aguirre Azorín will be the first PhD Student of the lab, thanks to an FPU fellowship, awarded by the Ministry of Education. With a strong background in nutrition and metabolism, Julia will lead the studies using the Abcd3 KO mouse model investigating peroxisomal metabolism. Welcome Julia!
March: The first hire of the lab started working here! Yolanda Ramírez Casas studied Biology in Granada (Universidad de Granada) and is now about to defend her PhD in Biomedicine. With her ample experience with in vivo work, working with different mouse models, she will work now as staff scientist in the lab. Welcome Yolanda!
Big news! We have launched an exciting initiative here in Granada. It's a research network on translational metabolism. We have named it GRANAMET. and our first meeting took place on March 21st in a historical place in Granada, Corrala Santiago.

January: The first master student of the lab has started! Kimberly Gallegos Lazo studied Biology in Peru (Universidad Nacional de San Agustín) and a Master Degree in Biostatistics and Bioinformatics (Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia). She is now enrolled in "Máster Universitario en Condicionantes Genéticos Nutricionales y Ambientales del Crecimiento y Desarrollo" at the University of Granada. For her master thesis, she will study the effect of dicarboxylic acids on the mitochondria of liver cells. Welcome Kimberly!
2024
October 2024
Dr. Ranea-Robles presented the research lines of the lab the OEPM (Open European Peroxisome Meeting) in Sant Feliu de Guixols, at Costa Brava in Catalunya.
Together with a newly established PI at CIBM (Dr. Carmen Venegas) we organized the CIBM New Researchers Symposium. 8 new PIs recently established in Granada presented their research. The simposum was well received by the research community in Granada, and hopefully will contribute to the exciting research environment Granada has in the field of Biomedicine
Dr. Ranea-Robles presented the research lines of the lab at the neighbour research institute CSIC-IPBLN
September 2024: We begin this exciting adventure in the beautiful city of Granada, at the Center for Biomedical Research (CIBM in Spanish). And we did it with great news, the lab has been funded with a national grant from the Spanish Research Agency (AEI), the most important public funder in Spain. With that support we can delve into the secrets of peroxisomes and metabolism. Stay tuned for more exciting news
