Research on The Heart of Loneliness
"Regardless of our aspirations for living, toward professional advancement, the warmth of growing family, or the development of our hobbies and passions, ultimately it is a sense of self-satisfaction that we seek. And how can we find this quality without the loneliness for knowing ourselves, honestly, at all. I’ve walked alone for many years across the plateaus and plains of Spain, through the Alps and into the port towns and mountain villages in Turkey and the Persian Gulf. In the West it is much more difficult to be alone – the culture here doesn’t honor it so much. But from wandering I’ve learned to look for the quiet stones, soft benches and resting trees upon or under which to pause and collect myself."
This is one of Gao Xingjian's paintings.
