Info about upgrading your Mac to the latest Mac operating system (MacOS):
If your Mac computer is working well do some research before you upgrade the MacOS to a later version. Upgrading the MacOS can cause problems with installed software - both free and paid for versions. Make sure your Mac is not set up to automatically download and upgrade the MacOS. This puts you back in control of when you upgrade. Always back up your Mac with Time Machine or 3rd party backup software. A portable hard drive is the most convenient way to backup your machine.
The latest MacOS versions (Big Sur / Monterey / Ventura / Sonoma) are a major change to the way the operating system works 'under the hood'. Users won't notice too much difference apart from some new features. There have been some issues with older hardware and software not working properly with Big Sur / Monterey / Ventura even though in theory it should be supported. I would continue using your current version of MacOS unless there are specific reasons you NEED to upgrade. Always backup if you do decide to upgrade the MacOS. One option is to install a new version of MacOS to a 2nd hard drive or portable drive so you can test it on your Mac while keeping your existing install.

Upgrades / services for Macs:
For older Macs you can upgrade slow HDD hard drives to fast SSD hard drives for a big uplift in performance. Adding extra RAM memory will also help performance.
Increasing the storage space on Macs is a popular upgrade. Newer Macs have proprietry Apple SSD hard drives. These can be tricky to upgrade yourself. You need to get the correct SSD or it will not work. You can start with a fresh install of the Mac operating system (MacOS) or clone your existing MacOS over to the new drive.
You can run MacOS from a portable hard drive. I can install any compatible MacOS on a fast SSD drive that connects via a USB 3 or Thunderbolt port. This can be useful as an emergency backup should your MacOS run into problems. Another reason to have a portable MacOS is to test newer versions - see whether you like the updated version and test your important software to make sure it works as it should. It also allows different people to share a machine if you prefer not to have multiple user accounts on one MacOS install. It will run on any compatible Mac, so you can take your PC with you.
