About the University of Pavia
About the University of Pavia
The University of Pavia is one of the oldest universities in Europe. An edict issued by King Lotharius quotes a higher education institution in Pavia as already established in 825. This institution, mainly devoted to law studies, was then chosen as the main education center for northern Italy. Enlarged and renovated by the Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, it became the University of the Duchy, officially established as a Studium Generale by Emperor Charles IV in 1361.
Today Pavia is a Research University, offering a wide variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching organized in 18 Departments and has study programs at all levels: Bachelor’s degrees, single-cycle Masters degrees, research degrees, specialty schools and level I and II Masters degrees. Research is carried out in departments, institutes, clinics, centers and laboratories in close association with public and private institutions, enterprises and companies.

The Department of Economics at Illinois has worked closely with the University of Pavia to approve a wide variety of courses at the University of Pavia for which students may receive advanced Illinois Economics credit. ITAL 390: Migrants and Tourists: a tale of two Italies
Join professors Emanuel Rota and Eleonora Stoppino in their native Italy for an in-depth study of the role of migration in conceptions of Italian identity. Migration is increasingly the key political and cultural issue in the age of globalization, and Italy has been at the forefront of the clashes and encounters of Mediterranean cultures. One of the results of this transformation has been an increasingly divergent experience of Italy. On one hand, Italy is a popular destination for international tourists. Italians market Italy as a safe space where culture and a good life can be experienced by international visitors. On the other hand, refugees and migrants disrupt the narrative of a stable Italian culture and of Italy as a welcoming and hospitable destination. The course aims to unify the narratives of two segregated Italies.
