Q: I'd like to sign up for lessons, when should I do that?
A: My studio schedule for the Fall is determined by August. If you would like to be considered for a Fall time-slot it is important to contact me in the Spring. Generally, intake interviews and applications are taken in June.
Q: How much/how often should my child practice?
A: Consistent effort is required for consistent progress. Daily practice is the best way to achieve this.
For students in their first few months of lessons, 15 minutes daily is often enough.
After this point 20-30 minutes is recommended.
Students preparing for RCM examinations should practice for a minimum of 30 minutes, and add 10 minutes per grade, beginning at Grade 4, Grade 4=40 mins/day, Grade 8=80 mins/day, etc.
Q: Can I use my piano studies as school credits?
A: A Royal Conservatory of Music certificate can be used as 1 personal development credit at the High School Level.
Please refer to this link for details about which grades and theory co-requisites are required.
Please refer to this link for the procedure for applying the credits.
This is the School Board site for more information about Personal Development Credit.
Q: What if I miss a lesson?
A: Piano lessons are contracted on an annual basis, not on a per-lesson basis. Your tuition secures a unique spot in my private teaching schedule. There are 28 scheduled weeks of private lessons.
Your contract includes 26 weeks of private lessons, 3 workshops, 1 Christmas Party, 1 Mini Recital, and an end of year recital. The last 2 weeks in the private schedule are "make-up" weeks. These can be used to make up, up to 2 missed lessons during the school year. Any additional missed lessons are forfeited.
