Private Lessons
Private Lessons
Students meet with me weekly for their private lesson. At each lesson we cover activities from a range of learning objectives. Repertoire, music theory, piano technique, ear training, sight reading, improvisation, composition and more. My goal is to develop a full musician, not just someone trained on piano. For this reason there is great value in not only learning to read music, but also learning to play by ear, and by chord and develop an understanding of how music is composed.
The keen student is encouraged to prepare for Royal Conservatory Examinations or Kiwanis Festival once adequate training has been achieved. These goals required dedicated practice and specific advanced preparation as well as registration fees to outside organizations, according to their deadlines.
Beginning students can start with a 30 minute lesson. 45 and 60 minute lessons are available for advanced students or those training for a specific goal or outcome.

The focus of my teaching is on Private Lessons, however, there is a great deal of benefit to be gained from working with peers. To ensure that this benefit is maximized we meet in groups 4 times per year for Musicianship Workshops/Piano Parties . Since these are the only times that students are able to meet as a group they are very important meetings. During the weeks when Workshops are held, no private lessons are scheduled. (Please consult the studio calendar for specific dates.)
At workshops, students have an opportunity to share music with each other, play games and learn together. They are also a fun, low-pressure way to get to know other students in the studio, sometimes resulting in new friendships and always resulting in camaraderie and comfort in performing for others!
In the Spring, near Easter we have our Mini Recitals.
In the Spring, near Easter we have our Mini Recitals.
Don’t let the name fool you these recitals have maximum impact and give students a chance to shine. These recitals are in-studio recitals and feature just a few students. This allows students to prepare many pieces for presentation and aids them in gaining performance confidence. Since the recitals are held here, the audience is intimate (around 20 people) and encouraging. So fun!

At this event all students perform their best and favorite pieces! Traditionally this is held at the Peggy Corkum Music Room on an 8-foot Steinway grand!

Beginning with very informal parties and small peer workshops, moving up to in-studio recitals with smaller audiences, right up to public venues and concert hall experiences. I feel it is important for performers to gain confidence in performing and this gradual build up can make big performances far less intimidating.

I have all the technology to teach remote lessons that are almost as good as working together in person. I teach students around the world thanks to this!
