**School Counselors do not offer traditional therapy or long term counseling because of our large caseload. We will assess the student's need, and if we feel the student would benefit from more in-depth, traditional counseling, we will contact the parents/guardians to discuss resources available outside of school.**
In accordance with both South Dakota Codified Law (SDCL 19-19-508.1) and the Ethical Standards for School Counselor (ASCA, 2016), all information shared in a counseling session is considered confidential UNLESS the student shares that:
They are being harmed or threatened
Someone else is being harmed or threatened
They plan on harming themselves or someone else
They grant permission for confidentiality to be breached
Information with the intent of being made public
counselors are available by appointment only; crisis and teacher/admin-initiated excluded
the counseling office is not a place to skip, hang out, or refuse to go to class
be respectful to the space and the privacy of others
keep your hands to yourself and use appropriate language and a low voice
students items may not be stored in the counseling office without permission of a counseling staff member
lunch in the counseling office must be scheduled through a counselor; the counselor will provide a pass to the student(s) to exit the lunchroom and bring their lunch(es) to the counseling office
