CREATING RPL PUBLICITY AND AWARENESS
A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE ROLE PLAY
A RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) practitioner met with a group of young people who were keen to learn more about how they could receive official recognition for the knowledge and skills they had learned outside of the traditional classroom during the role-play, which was held in a Nyakoe community center.
The RPL practitioner began by defining the meaning of RPL and describing how it enables people to obtain official certifications for knowledge and abilities acquired through informal learning and life experiences. RPL is particularly relevant for people who may not have finished formal schooling but have acquired practical skills through employment, the practitioner stressed, as it can lead to opportunities for additional education, career advancement and even new employment.
The role play highlighted the real-life benefits of RPL for youth in Nyakoe, giving them a practical understanding of how their skills and experiences could be formally recognized. The session addressed their concerns, educated them on the process and encouraged them to take the next steps towards gaining qualifications that aligned with their real-world knowledge.
