Here I am in a session with PhD students at the MEDA 3 conference
I am Professor of Mathematics Education in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh and the Head of the The Technology Enhanced Mathematical Sciences Education Theme I am also visiting fellow in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of East Anglia.
I was the book review editor for the Research in Mathematics Education journal between 2015 and 2018 and the coordinator of the TWG21 (Assessment in mathematics education) at the CERME 10 conference in Dublin (February 2017) and at the CERME11 (Utrecht - February 2019) and CERME12 (Bolzano - February 2021). I am one of the three editors in chief of the International Journal of Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education.
I am the Chair of the IPC of the first ERME Topic Conference FAME (Feedback and Assessment in Mathematics Education - https://www.uu.nl/en/research/fame-feedback-assessment-in-mathematics-education ).
Research Interest
My research focuses on the teaching and learning of mathematics at university level and has three strands:
summative assessment of mathematics at university
mathematical reasoning and technology in university mathematics (use of automated theorem provers such as Lean - CAA assessment)
The transition from school to university mathematics
In the first strand I am interested in the impact of the discipline of study and student epistemological beliefs on their perceptions of assessment. Much of my work in this field has been supported by the HEA. I am also interested in university students’ study habits when preparing for assessment and the use of automated assessment.
My second research interest is mathematical reasoning at post-compulsory level, with emphasis on the use of Interactive Theorem Provers Lean (https://leanprover-community.github.io) for teaching first year mathematics.
