Ordering & Distributing Kits

There are typically two pack meetings per year where scouts need kits:

1. Raingutter Regatta or Space Rockets

2. Pinewood Derby

For either event, you need to plan ahead to a) order the kits, b) distribute them, and c) leave enough time for scouts to build them in time for the event.  Don’t forget to email your receipt to treasurer@pack556.com after to get reimbursed.

Ordering Tips:

• Ordering online from https://www.scoutshop.org/ may not be the fastest, but it is the most convenient.  You may get free shipping if you order enough.

• Picking up supplies from the Scout Shop on Julian street is an option, but call ahead to ensure they have enough and they can set them aside for you to make the purchase quick.

• Check the storage container FIRST because we have lots of leftover kits from previous years.

• Buy an extra supply of rubber bands for the Space Rocket kits (any bands that were left in storage are rotten and will break at first use)

• Regatta/Space Rockets should be distributed at least 3 weeks prior to the pack event to give people time to build.

• Pinewood Derby kits should be distributed by mid-November (at the latest!) to give families a long time to plan and build (especially with the winter holiday in between).

• Order extra kits for siblings (<10 kits is typically enough)

Distributing Tips:

• Distribute kits to den leaders (then they are responsible for distributing to their den members)

• It’s easy to distribute to den leaders at the leadership meetings

• It is hard to distribute kits at a pack meeting.  Especially don’t try to distribute kits to individual scouts at a pack meeting.  It’s chaos.

• For den leaders or individuals that need to pick up, leave them on porches.  You don’t need to drive all over town getting kits to families.
