Next Pack Meeting: 23 January - Pinewood Derby!
Pack 556 runs a lot of fun events throughout the year. Here is a look at our schedule for pack-wide events for a typical year. In addition to these events, you’ll be meeting with your den regularly to work on fun adventures in a smaller group setting.
Bike Rodeo (August)
Open to existing scouts and children thinking about joining, the Bike Rodeo is a fun afternoon with bike agility events. A representative from the Los Gatos Police Department usually joins us to discuss bike safety.
First pack meeting of the year (September)
Get the new scouting year off to a great start! Say hello to old friends, meet new ones, and participate in some fun activities.
Raingutter Regatta (October)
Ahoy, mateys! Build a sailboat and race them against other scouts. It’s the sailing equivalent of the famous Pinewood Derby.
Pack camping trip (typically twice per year; in fall & spring)
Make lifelong memories with your scout in one of the pack’s annual camping trips. Learn how to pitch a tent, cook outside – and roast the perfect marshmallow. Just like with all scout activities, the whole family is invited to join the fun.
American flag night (November)
On this memorable evening, scouts learn the story of how the flag was created, learn how to fold a flag, and learn how to properly retire an old flag.
Los Gatos Holiday parade (December)
March in the annual Los Gatos holiday parade, clearing the way for Santa Claus himself to drive down Santa Cruz avenue.
Visit this page for run-down of the day and logistics for our pack.
Carnival Night (December)
Join the scouts for a fun night of games – all designed and organized by the Bear scouts (3rd graders).
Pinewood Derby (January)
In the Pinewood Derby, one of the most famous and memorable events in cub scouting, scouts build and decorate their own race cars. The fastest cars race at the District Race. It’s not all about speed though. There are awards for the best paint job, best off-roading vehicle, the car the cubmaster most wants to eat, most patriotic, etc.
Arrow of Light Crossover to Boy Scouts (March)
Celebrate the annual birthday of scouting with the Blue and Gold Banquet. This is an opportunity for all pack families to have dinner together and celebrate various awards, including scouts earning their Arrow of Light awards and crossing over to Boy Scouts.
Blue and Gold Banquet (March)
Celebrate the annual birthday of scouting with the Blue and Gold Banquet and our annual Friends of Scouting Cake Auction!
USS Hornet
We will have a sleep onboard the historic USS Hornet.
Science and engineering challenge, aka Egg Drop Night (April)
Who wouldn’t like to drop eggs from a height and see if they crack? This night is about using a limited bundle of household materials to build an egg “protector” and drop it from a height and see what happens. It can get messy!
Graduation and picnic at Vasona Park (May)
Families gather for a BBQ dinner, some fun games, and awards. Scouts who have completed all their required adventures will be awarded their rank badge.
