A jack knife is mostly used by hunters, fishermen and campers. The knife may have one or more than one blade and a hinge on one end of the handle.
Unlike the jack knife, a pen knife has a hinge on both the ends of the handle. This type of knife also has multiple blades (2 to 3) at each end of the handle. Although it was traditionally created with an intention of sharpening the pen quill, it has evolved over the time to serve as a multipurpose tool. The knife is popular for its small and compact size and lightweight.
These are still great knives for Scouts to have and carry but not when trying to learn to use a Pocketknife safely.
Here's the thing... Yes there is a thing!
Cub Scouts and people in general should have two knives available to them at all times. Why? For 2 very good reasons
First they should have 1 knife that is for general use. Easy open - Easy close - Easy to handle. Used to open boxes, packages, Cut Rope, etc. This general knife should also be safe to handle while whittling on wood.
The 2nd knife they should have is a Multifunction Knife such as the Famous Swiss Army Knife. A small one to start out with that has a small blade, screw driver/s, maybe a can opener &/or small scissors.
