Studio Tirol Dutch, Flemish, and German-language music, with the occasional bit of English.
Studio Tirol (broadcast on the 103.0 MHz FM band) is a nostalgic term directly associated with classic and pirate radio music.
A Side Note" Many make a mistake with Studio (Radio Edelweis from Sittard) These are two different pirate radio stations from the past"
The names you mention are inextricably linked to the famous vinyl singles and artists from this culture:
• Onkel Heinrich / Edelweiss: This refers directly to the famous atmospheric single "Onkel Heinrich in Tirol" (with the "Edelweiss Walzer" on the B-side). The song was originally released in 1958 by Jantje Hendrikx & Ria Roda, but later became a massive hit on the pirate radio circuit thanks to the performance by the Trio Horstman (1969/1975) and yodeling queen Olga Lowina.
103 MHz FM: The frequency 103 MHz (and just around it) was an absolute favorite in the 70s, 80s, and 90s for pirate radio stations and free radio stations in both the Netherlands and Belgium to broadcast their recognizable sound and convivial atmosphere.
What does the archive say about Studio Tirol on the border?
• The Location & The Country: Studio Tirol was a well-known pirate radio station operating from Maastricht (the Netherlands), right on the Belgian border (Flemish Limburg). Due to the high elevation of parts of South Limburg and the Belgian border region (such as the border area near Lanaken and Kanne), the signals carried extremely far across the national borders at the time.
The Broadcast Times: According to reports in the archives from October 1981, Studio Tirol only broadcast in the evenings at that time. During the day, the station remained off the air to evade the Radio Control Service (RCD) and because the FM band was too crowded with official stations during the day. Only when "the coast was clear" in the evening did the transmitter switch on to send schlagers, yodeling music, and songs like Onkel Heinrich into the airwaves.
Given that I was already listening to the radio as a 9-year-old and later ran Radio Grensjager myself from 1978 to 1989, and lost everything in a fire in 2012—from logs to QSL stickers, etc., etc.—I am missing a part of the stories and DXing with fellow pirates.
Therefore, the above may be partially missing or incorrect. Are you or a descendant of Studio Tirol from the past? Do you still have video, photos, or jingle material? Please let us know.
