Residents in Bloordale, Parkdale, and Kensington Market have secured millions of dollars to protect and produce affordable housing.
We wanted to accomplish similar things here in Oakwood Vaughan through the creation of the Affordable Housing Working Group (AHWG), which was launched on June 21, 2022.

AHWG BASIC PRINCIPLES
Housing is a human right
Affordable housing is defined as not costing more than 30% of tenant income
PURPOSE
1. To be an effective community voice advocating for affordable housing by:
Intervening in housing decision-making and consultation
Speaking out on the issue of affordable housing
Developing awareness of the housing affordability crisis
Engaging the community to develop broad support
Support tenant leadership in affordable housing advocacy
2. To coordinate affordable housing work by:
Tracking progress on the work of the sub-groups and offering support
Discussing strategies for implementation, including reviewing feasibility and approving new ideas
Coordinating the work of the sub-groups into an overall strategy
Sharing learnings and offer mutual support
Building solidarity and collegiality around this important community work
Partnering with other groups to advocate for affordable housing
Establishing a Community Land Trust
3. To engage with government and stakeholders, and establish partnerships and allies
AHWG currently has two sugroups:
(1) Anti-displacement
AHWG currently has two task forces:
(1)To set up a reference group for developer negotiations
(2) To develop a strategy for including Little Jamaica in IZ (Inclusionary Zoning) destination.
