whiteboards and whiteboard markers and/or clipboards, paper and pencils
Instructions
Send groups of students to different areas (e.g in the grass, under those trees, near the fence)
Have them write down all the living things they see (working individually)
If they don't know what it is called, it is okay to describe it
They can also write down clear signs of a living thing (e.g. paw prints, scat, spider webs)
Have them get together with the people assigned to their same area and consolidate the living things they found into one list and count up how many living things they found
Share out their numbers and discuss the biodiversity in the different areas
Points to Emphasize and Discuss
What is biodiversity?
Which area had the highest biodiversity and why?
Why is biodiversity important?
What natural and human caused factors contribute to biodiversity?
