Interview & Survey Results

Better understanding of what a user would most likely look for in a travel app

Interview Findings

The interview was designed to expand on some of the key questions in the survey with the hope of generating a more in depth analysis of how the user perceives the choices we chose. Our interview was conducted with people who prioritize different things during the planning of a vacation which was important to finding our ideal user. Our ideal user would someone who would be far too busy to plan their own vacation due to other obligations and would not have the time to go to a travel agent. We found that the planner who must be in control of every aspect of the trip would not want to use our application as they would still rather do the tedious planning themselves. Our target user is someone that is okay with the fact that their trip will be planned for them. One important feature that all users felt would be important on travel application is being able to save the important information on the device itself. The user will not always have phone service when traveling internationally so it would be essential to have some of the information about the trip preloaded onto the phone.

Survey Findings

Through our survey, we found that just over half of the respondents were between twenty-one and twenty-four years of age and that the other half were broken into two groups: people between twenty-five and thirty years of age and people between forty-six and fifty-nine years of age. We also found that a majority of our respondents were male as well as being students. Just about half of our respondents reported that their yearly income is between $10,000 and $29,999 while 27% reported that they either make between $50,000 and $69,999 or less than $10,000.

We found that just over half of our respondents go on vacation two to four times a year and have never used a travel agent. While just over half of our respondents said they never used a travel agent, we found that just over half of our respondents also used either a website, mobile app, or both to plan their vacation. We also found that most people, when looking for a travel guide application look for an app that has current information, has trustworthy reviews, has good visuals, and functions well. We also found that there was a lot of variations in how long people spend planning their vacations, but that the majority spend between 8 hours and 1 week planning their vacations.

We found that just over 80% of our respondents plan a budget for the attractions that they wish to see and that a large majority of people would rather read a short summary of the attractions instead of a full length description. Just over half of the respondents said that they look for main attractions as well as lesser known attractions when planning their vacations and a vast majority of them said that they’d be interested in learning about the lesser known attractions when they travel.

Our last question was “What would make you more likely to use a travel app?” The three answer choices that respondents liked the most were: having current information/reviews, having a variety in attractions, and the ability to personalize.
