Welcome to our classroom! I invite you to learn about our classroom and routines as your child begins Grade 1. Families are welcome to stop by after school, ask questions, look around, and learn about where your child will be learning each day. Here are a few pictures to give you a glimpse of your child's learning environment if you are unable to stop by.
Our classroom is an ever changing environment based on the needs of students and the learning projects we have underway. With safety protocols shifting over the past few years, we will continue to maintain some positive routines we have in place to support the health and wellness of the Lochside community. Here are a few routines that we will continue to support:
Table spots - students will have assigned table spots for eating and routine table jobs.
Flexible learning in our space - Tables are spaced out for everyone to move around easily and enjoy working and playing independently and in groups. Learning looks different for everyone, so standing desks, clipboards, cozy nooks, and private desk options are always available to support your child's learning.
Handwashing - Frequent hand washing at transition times, before and after eating, and after using the washroom is part of our daily routines which we will continue to practice.
Health and Safety - We have a student with an anaphylactic allergy to walnuts and pecans in our class this year. Please be aware of this and DO NOT pack walnuts or pecans in your child's lunch/snack as we work together to keep everyone safe.
Outdoor Learning - Much of our learning is done outdoors, with a nature-based approach to learning that can be incorporated into all areas of the curriculum. We are outside for learning, playing, and physical activities everyday, rain or shine. With this in mind, please pack an extra pair of clothes (including underwear and socks) in a ziploc bag to be kept in your child's cubby. A rain jacket and rain pants (if possible) on rainy days, and a hat are all helpful in making your child feel comfortable to learn and explore no matter what the weather. With lost and found often overflowing, please label your child's clothing so that it can be returned if found. Thank you in advance for your help with this! More information about outdoor learning and permission forms to access our local trails and parks will be coming home soon.
Pick up and drop off is done at our outside door to get in and out of the building. Take a look at the picture to the left for where the students in our class will be lining up before school. Students are welcome to put their backpacks in line up against the wall and play until the morning welcome invites everyone in.
At the end of the day I will be dismissing students to family members. As you and your child(ren) become more comfortable and have a chance to connect with me, you are welcome to have a meeting spot after school that you would like your child to go to independently. I know that the school yard and parking lot can be hectic after school! For now, it is helpful for me to see a family member or guardian's face at the end of the day so that I know your child has found you.
