The Development of Hyperspectral Imaging: From Space Sensors to Handhelds

Dr. Ian Howard currently works at ZEISS Innovation Hub@KIT as an innovation scout for circular economy. Previously, he was leading 'Advanced Materials and Optical Spectroscopy' Group at Institute of Microstructure Technology, KIT.

ZEISS is a world renowned company in the fields of optics and numerous medical technologies and ZEISS Innovation Hub @KIT is a mutual collaboration between ZEISS and KIT which enable ZEISS to work with partners in academia and industry to identify and develop innovative technologies for their current business units, and beyond. Their motto is “turning today’s research into tomorrow’s applications – together”.

In his talk, Dr. Howard will tell us about the utility of seeing the world with spectral resolution, and will follow us through the development of multispectral to hyperspectral cameras from initial applications in earth's observation from space to current handheld technologies. Further, he will also introduce push-broom and snapshot camera technologies, and their applications.

Hyperspectral imaging plays a significant role in the observation of earth from space. This talk will discuss the technology behind hyperspectral images and its evolving applications.
