Bio/CV

As an educator, I have taught in a wide variety of situations, including private studios, high schools, and university settings. I hold an Associates Diploma in Keyboard Teaching from the St. Cecilia School of Music, and for many years in Sydney I taught students piano, organ, composition, and music theory. I also taught a range of high school workshops including topics in music theory and world music, the latter preparing students for the IB Diploma program. Through Crimson Education, I have taught students all over the world, helping many to achieve a 7/7 in IB Music, and A grades for Extended Essays in music. At the university level, I have been instructor of record at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at The University of Sydney, Western Washington University, and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. As a TA in the University of British Columbia School of Music, I have taught across the disciplines of ethnomusicology, musicology, and music theory.

As a countertenor, I primarily sing as part of church choirs and small consort ensembles, with occasional solo work in the mix. As a lay clerk, I have sung with St Andrew's Cathedral Choir, St Mary’s Cathedral choir, Christ Church Cathedral Vancouver, and the St Paul’s College choir at the University of Sydney; as a scholar in the choir of Christ Church St Laurence and St James' Anglican Church, Vancouver; and as a consort singer with The Song Company, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra Choir and National Youth Choir of Australia. As a soloist, I have performed with the Willoughby Symphony, the choir of Christ Church St. Laurence, the National Youth Choir of Australia (in association with RSCM), the St Andrew's Cathedral Academy of Ancient Music, the Jewish Choral Society of Sydney, and Operantics. I grew up singing as a boy soprano chorister in the St Andrew's Cathedral Choir, and during that time performed with Opera Australia in 4 productions.

I also play the Zimbabwean mbira on the side, and have participated in ZimFest and Nhemamusasa North, two organisations that gather musicians interested in Zimbabwean music in the Pacific Northwest. The main teachers I have been privileged to learn from are Kurai Mubaiwa, Musekiwa Chingodza, Bezil Makombe, Claire Jones, and Caden Davis. I have performed with the Chimurenga-style marimba/mbira/drums/guitar group Dandemutande in Bellingham and Whidbey Island, Washington State. I gave mbira lecture-demonstrations at UBC in classes ranging from undergrad intro courses, anthropology lectures, and graduate analysis seminars. I am the proud owner of eight mbira made variously by Fradreck Mujuru, Othnell Mangoma Moyo, Josephat Mandaza, Munashe Chivese, and Samson Bvure.
