Gamelan Gita Asmara is Vancouver's premiere Balinese Gamelan ensemble. A community group based at UBC, GGA has concertised yearly throughout the BC lower mainland area since 2001, including venues such as The Chan Centre, The Annex, The Roundhouse, Performance Works, Anvil Theatre, and local tours in the Gulf Islands. In 2013, they performed across Bali, bringing innovative musical offerings forged through long-term collaboration with Balinese artists back to their source. GGA’s former teachers include Dewa Alit, Wayan Sudirana, and I Putu Gede Sukaryana (Balot).
Using a new kind of Balinese gamelan set called a Gamelan Gong Semara Dana, the group learns Balinese repertoire on an intensive practice schedule. Members bring long-term focus and commitment to rehearsal and performance. It is a dedicated collective committed to mastering this challenging music together, the rewards of making something of aesthetic and social value, and the joy of sharing this with audiences.
