In 2024, together with 8 partner organisations from Croatia, Greece, France, Hungary, Italy and the Netherlands, we started working on the two-year project "WISE - Women In Solidarity for Energy" funded by the European Commission under the Citizens, Equality, Values and Rights programme and co-funded by the European Climate Foundation. WISE targets single women on low incomes, single mothers, elderly women and migrant women, who are generally more socio-economically vulnerable, increasing the risk of living in energy poverty. The project aims to raise awareness of energy justice and provide opportunities for participation in policy development to eradicate energy poverty. Orion Grid's ambition with this project is to stimulate citizen participation, support the empowerment of vulnerable people and communities and increase solidarity on issues and concerns related to energy poverty and just energy transition.
"The Open Line for Activists", funded by the Bulgarian Fund for Women Open Opportunities Programme in two quarterly editions in late 2023 and 2024. Nearly 50 consultations have been held in which activists and human rights defenders have explored issues of activism, new ventures, conflicts between activism and personal life, action, self-care, and more. Several communities and social movements have also emerged from the line and/or been supported, including a peer support group for women activists hosted and facilitated by us, which has existed since October 2023 and continues to this day. In “Unearth: Narratives, Experiences, and Solutions about Climate change Beneath the Surface of Publicity”, we spent a year combining different methods to explore the question of where climate change communication is "breaking down" and how it can be more accessible and inclusive. The project was implemented with financial support from the European Climate Foundation. The results may be useful for social scientists, journalists and media, NGOs, activists, policy makers and other researchers engaged in the topic of climate change. In 2023 a large part of our time and efforts are dedicated to the project "Crust and Core: team, communication, communities", implemented within the funding program for organizational and administrative needs "Mission Possible" of the Bulgarian Fund for Women. Our focus is strengthening the work and communication of Orion Grid. In the Core part, we focus on improving internal team processes and the strategic development of the organization in the long term. In the Crust part, we aim to mobilize the broader community of the organisation and revitalise and/or maintain more sustainably and actively the thematic communities formed around the previous projects.
We were awarded our first project funding in 2020 with the Feminist Epistemologies in Action project. We emphasised the community-based nature of this six-month course and its function as an intervention in the socio-political field. We translated nearly 500 pages of key texts, which we discussed over a week in two ninety-minute sessions devoted to education, community and personal development. Funded by the Bulgarian Fund for Women. An analytical report is available.
Since 01.07.2023 the Emergency Fund for Women's Human Rights is funding a six-month project of Orion Grid. It will support the struggles of the feminist movement and its various currents in Bulgaria through: a) discussions on the concept of gender as a key tool for working with power imbalances in the socio-political field and b) process consultations to unblock and facilitate the activities of groups, organizations, collectives and movements that promote feminist action (even if they do not identify as feminist). The project builds on the Feminist Epistemologies in Action course and focuses on the development of feminist theory and praxis in Bulgaria.
