Online Instruction Fundamentals

Welcome to the Online Instruction Fundamentals short course!

The office of Online Programs and Academic Partnerships is excited to begin this new venture with you and to assist you in creating your new online or hybrid course. This self-paced short course will help you to cultivate and implement online course design, development, and delivery skills. The journey begins with course mapping, ultimately resulting in a completed course map and fully developed learning module for your new online course that will be reviewed by one of our in-house instructional designers. Once reviewed, and revised as needed, this learning module can be used as a model for building out the rest of your course. Using consistent intentional design and instructional decision-making throughout your course will help to ensure a positive experience for both you and your students.

By the end of this short course, you will be able to:

  1. Create the digital learning environment for an online/hybrid course within Blackboard.

  2. Create learning objectives that describe what learners will be able to do upon completion of the course.

  3. Design assessments that align with the course learning objectives.

  4. Integrate instructional materials that enable learners to achieve stated learning objectives.

  5. Integrate learning activities that facilitate and support learner interaction and engagement.

  6. Select appropriate course technologies that support learners’ achievement of course objectives.

  7. Create an agenda and narrative explanation for each module that communicates the purpose of and relationships between activities.

Short Course Completion Requirements:

Upon completion of this course, you will have created a complete course map and course module designed in Blackboard to submit to the Office of Online Programs and Academic Partnerships for feedback. Once reviewed, and revised as needed, you will receive a completion certificate that will allow you to bypass this short course the next time you develop a new online or hybrid course at HPU.

As you progress throughout this short course, feel free to reach out to our team to ask questions or to elicit feedback. We are always here to help.
