We love to read!!! For starters . . .

We read Devil's Bridge by Cynthia DeFelice. Rye says, "I liked the mystery in the book and surprises at the end. I wouldn't have made the same choice as Ben did at the end." Owen's take: "I read it three times. I liked the island and derby history in there."

Our latest read aloud is Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea . We can't believe how much we are learning about fish behavior and enjoyed learning that turtles eat Portuguese Man of War. Owen feels something big is about to happen because why else would they focus on this one day when the old man has been so unlucky?

Rye says, "Waves, ice burgs and storms. It is interesting what dangers commercial fishermen face" in Deep-Sea Fishermen in Action by Tyler Omoth.

We also are enjoying Ed Jerome's An Amazing Story of the Vineyard's Derby, which shows paintings of favorite fishing spots and quick, fun, informative stories by local fishing heroes. Did you know that Derby headquarters is the only shack to survive the 1938 and 1944 hurricanes? We learned that in Mark Lovewell's essay.

Martha's Vineyard Fishing Tales by Nelson Sigelman gives advice about fishing and tells fish tales, similar to the book above.

We enjoyed learning about Sylvia Earle, one of the first female marine biologists in "Mission Blue". She had so much to say about taking care of the ocean.
