GLOSSARY/Helpful Fishing Terms We have Just Learned:


bunker- fish that striped bass feed on. All bass fishermen hope to see schools of them!


canyon- part where the ocean drops. There's a famously deep one near the Bahamas.


chumming- throwing bait in the water to attract fish


dressed weight- partially butchered fish-- usually its fins & head are off and it has lost a lot of blood


fathom- 6 feet deep in the ocean


hope spots- Dr. Sylvia Earle (Mission Blue) help designate places in the ocean with special fishing restrictions, etc. to help the area become healthy again


jig- has a lead sinker with a hook molded into it and usually covered by a soft body. They create a jerky motions. Option to include bait with this lure.


leader line- tough, typically wire line that you put on your lure or hook before you have the line on your fish pole. This line is harder for a fish to see and helps you to keep your lure if you've got a biting bluefish on!


live weight- weigh of a fish just hauled from the water


plugs- a hard-bodied lure


triple crown-- when a fisherman catches all three species in the MV Derby: bonito, false albacore & bluefish
