Everything ChatCellar keeps is stored inside your browser, in the extension’s own storage. Websites, including ChatGPT and Claude, can’t read it.
Chats you save: for each chat, its title, its web address, and each message with who sent it (you or the assistant), the message text and when ChatCellar saved it. For Claude, this includes the “Thought process” text if you had it open on screen when the chat was saved.
A search copy of each saved chat (the same text in lower case without accents), so search works offline. It is deleted together with the chat.
Your settings (for example, whether auto-save is on).
If you buy a license: your license key, its status and when it was last checked.
ChatCellar runs only on chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com and claude.ai. It reads the conversation that is already shown in the tab you’re looking at:
when you click “Save this chat”, or
if you turn on auto-save (it’s off until you do), after the chat on screen stops changing.
It doesn’t read other tabs, your browsing history, other websites or the text you’re still typing. It doesn’t use ChatGPT’s or Claude’s internal services, and it doesn’t load your other conversations in the background. Claude artifacts shown in the side panel are not saved.
When you activate a purchased license, and then about every 14 days to confirm it’s still valid, the extension sends your license key and the product ID to Gumroad’s license-verification service (https://api.gumroad.com/v2/licenses/verify). That request is the only network call the extension makes. Like any web request, Gumroad also receives your IP address. Gumroad’s privacy policy applies to that request: https://gumroad.com/privacy. If you never buy a license, the extension makes no network requests at all.
Your chats are never sent anywhere: not to us, not to Gumroad, not to anyone.
Exporting (Markdown or JSON), “Export all” (.zip) and backups create files on your own computer through your browser’s normal download. Restoring reads a backup file you pick from your computer. Nothing is uploaded.
No analytics, tracking or telemetry.
No accounts, sign-ins, cloud sync or sharing.
We do not collect, sell, rent or share your data. Your chats are never sent to us or anyone else.
No ads, and no AI processing of your chats.
Access to chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com and claude.ai: lets ChatCellar read the chat you’re viewing on those sites, as described above. It does not run on any other website.
storage: saves your settings and license status.
unlimitedStorage: lets your archive grow without the browser clearing it when disk space runs low.
ChatCellar asks for no other permissions. It needs no permission for Gumroad, because Gumroad’s license service accepts requests from extensions, and the browser blocks the extension from contacting any other address.
Purchases are processed by Gumroad, Inc. ChatCellar never sees or stores your payment details.
Delete a chat from the library to remove it. Uninstalling ChatCellar deletes everything it stored in your browser, including all saved chats, so make a backup first if you want to keep them. Files you exported stay where you saved them.
