8th Grade Science – Mrs. Hepner

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood.  Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. – Marie Curie

Welcome to 8th grade Science!  I am a Western Illinois University graduate and have been teaching at OMS for 16 years.  My husband and I have two adult sons and a cat.  When I’m not teaching, I love doing anything outdoors! I enjoy hiking through the woods, gardening, rock collecting, and staying up late to look at the night sky.  I am also the OMS 8th grade Scholastic Bowl Sponsor.

I use Google Classroom with daily assignments and instructions along with downloadable resources.  I also created a website with additional resources.

I am looking forward to getting to know each of you while exploring the OMS 8th grade Science curriculum together.  The focus for 8th grade is Earth Science.  This class is designed to develop an understanding of the planet Earth, its processes, and outer space.

Studying Earth science teaches us how the universe works, helping us understand how we are all connected.  Understanding that connectedness helps us realize that protecting our natural resources is in everyone's best interest, even when there is a cost to doing so. In the words of Alanis Obomsawin, "When the last tree is cut, the last fish is caught, and the river is polluted; when to breathe the air is sickening, you will realize, too late, that wealth is not in bank accounts and that you cannot eat money."
