In 2009, the British Homes Awards asked architects to design a house of the future.
The house had to adapt to different stages of life, especially for older people or people with mobility problems. The designers also wanted to create friendly communities where people could share spaces.
The winning house was called SunnySideUp and it was designed by Kosi Architects. It won the competition thanks to public votes. The house is modern, practical and very flexible.
One of its most interesting ideas is the upside-down design. Normally, bedrooms are upstairs and living rooms are downstairs, but in SunnySideUp this is different. The living room, dining room and kitchen are on the top floor, where there is more natural light and better views. The bedrooms are on the ground floor, which is cooler and more private. The floors are connected by wide stairs that can include a stair lift in the future.
Another important feature is the hidden parking area. Cars are kept on the lower floor, so the terrace area is completely car-free. This makes it safer for children and more pleasant for neighbours. A lift connects the garage with the living area, helping elderly people and those carrying heavy shopping. There are also planters outside the kitchens where residents can grow flowers and vegetables.
Finally, the house has flexible spaces. The bedrooms on the ground floor can be rented to earn extra money. In the future, they can also be used as a small flat for grandparents, an office or rooms for older children. If more space is needed, the loft or a gallery floor can be added.
At the moment, SunnySideUp has not been built yet, but the architects hope it will be in the future.
