It’s a volunteer-led, community nonprofit in Omaha whose mission is to reduce litter by engaging citizens, supplying tools, and creating opportunities for cleanups. They provide litter pick-up starter kits (“Blue Bucket Kits”) which include things like a 5-gallon bucket, grabber tool, reusable gloves, safety vest, trash bags. They organize events called Flash Trash Mobs: groups of volunteers who gather for a short, intense cleanup (usually about 60 minutes) in specific areas that need it.
How the Trash Clean-Up Part Works
Blue Bucket provides the supplies so people don’t have to bring everything themselves. Volunteers use the kits to pick up litter in their neighborhoods or public spaces.
These cleanups help reduce litter, improve neighborhood appearance, make public trails and parks more safe and enjoyable. They also help build community: people meet, work together, feel more invested in keeping their surroundings clean. The visibility matters: when people see others participating, it encourages more participation.
