While working on my high school paper, I've been lucky enough to attend many journalism workshops at local colleges. Hearing from professors who work specifically in ethics and press law has helped me integrate these ideas into my publication's work. We've adapted presentations from such workshops to teach Journalism 1 students about the Code of Ethics right from their first day in the classroom. I've passed out copies of the Code of Ethics alongside our paper's style sheet to truly emphasize the journalistic ideals of integrity and truth each year, hoping to show how important morality is in terms of journalism. In Journalism 1 and 2, students often complete assignments to work on news literacy. From distinguishing fake news from real news, credible sites from non-credible sites, I make sure my writers are literate to the point where they feel comfortable in a news media setting. I'm also insane about spotting plagarism in stories (as it's my biggest pet peeve - I read everyone's writing enough to know when something doesn't sound like them!) and will call out any instances I catch before an article is published online or in our printed paper.Â
