How to Teach Global Competencies
The best way to get started is to start small! Try to incorporate one of the resources linked above into an existing lesson to get students to make connections between what they are learning and global challenges. I find a lot of these resources translate well into Warm Up questions or Exit Ticket framing.
Above you'll find the lesson planning document that I collaborated on with a partner teacher in Washington State in order to introduce our classes to each other and discuss the concept of globalization via Flipgrid. Flipgrid is a fun and intuitive site, and connecting your classroom with classrooms from elsewhere in the US and around the world is a great way to pique students' curiosity about people who live outside of their immediate communities.
Check out this short YouTube video to get a glimpse of what it could look like to connect your classroom to other classrooms around the world! Any classroom with internet access can engage in this type of cultural exchange.
Need ways to connect to other teachers? Check out the resources at the end of this article from Education Week. I'm also happy to help you get started :)
