Acceleration, Not Remediation

Instead of focusing time on reteaching or remediating "gaps," OLG School teachers will focus on building connections between previous and current learning. Every standard builds in the next grade level. This is called vertical alignment and it means nothing is taught and then abandoned in isolation. To see how teacher will work previous knowledge into current instruction, follow one math standard from Kindergarten and see how it builds each year all the way to 8th grade.

1.OA.A.1

Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions.

2.OA.C.3

Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of numbers by pairing objects or counting them by 2s, write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.

3.OA.A.1

Interpret products of whole numbers as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each.

4.OA.A.1

Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

5.NF.B.3

Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator. Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers.

6.RP.A.2

Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with. ratio a:b and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.

7.RP.A.1

Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units.

8.EE.B.5

Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways.
