The Clash were a British punk rock band formed in London in 1976. Billed as "The Only Band That Matters", they are considered one of the most influential acts in the original wave of British punk rock, with their music fusing elements of reggae, dub, funk, ska, and rockabilly.

In 1973, Strummer moved to Newport, South Wales from London. He didn't study at Newport College of Art, but he met up with college musicians at the students' union in Stow Hill and became the vocalist for Flaming Youth before renaming the band the Vultures. 

Strummer worked as a grave digger in St Woolos cemetery before moving back to London where he went out with Slits member, Palmolive and The Clash were formed in 1976 after Mick Jones saw The Sex Pistlos for the first time.

The Slits were all too brief in their original form - As John Peel says at the top of this session, "The Slits play Slit Rock, and I think the problem is, they don't play it often enough".

A wonderful excuse to also hear again the beautiful tones of John Peel, the one man responsible for nurturing and giving voice to decades of young people through their music.

Ian Dury was a British singer, songwriter and actor who rose to fame in the late 1970s, during the punk and new wave era of rock music. He was the lead singer and lyricist of Kilburn and the High Roads, the Kilburns, Ian Dury and the Blockheads and Ian Dury and the Music Students.

At age seven, Dury contracted polio, most likely, he believed, at Westcliff Swimming Pool in Southend-on-Sea during the 1949 polio epidemic.
