When I started the project ‘Skjultvik’ I set out to create a concept book type portfolio showcasing the character designs, setting and style I would be going for should it be a tv show or film. However, after some discussion (with Paul Mallison) and taking a look at the development package content I decided on creating an animated ebook instead. This would allow me to capture the ‘essence’ of Skjultvik whilst also telling a story...
...I came up with the idea of writing a poem or a hymn that would be within the story itself. My thought was that this hymn would be found and read by the main cast during their exploration and be part of the mystery they are trying to solve.
Illustrating this would allow me to set the overall setting and mood for Skjultvik whilst also incorporating the elements from the main story.
The poem itself is a warning from the ancestors of those who live in Skjultvik , showing that the darkness and happenings in the woods have been going on for centuries. It tells the story of the towns dark history and of deaths that have happened because of this.
Dix has a very interesting portfolio site here: Grim Reality
I love these cartoons by Pete McKee, they were hanging in an AirBnB where we stayed in Sheffield. Which is appropriate, as McKee is from Sheffield. And the images are around the theme of 'British Holidays'.
The characters in his drawings are so expressive, even though they don't have many facial features. What makes them work is how he finds the exact moment in time, physically, and how he economically uses signifiers (props as clues) to help us quickly see what has just happened, or is about to happen...Poetry.
< And this one is uncannily like my friend Paul, who is also a Mod and rides scooters.
