The Hat
This pattern uses Sport weight yarn, sometimes known as 5-ply, which sits between 4-ply and DK and is usually knitted on 3.50mm - 3.75mm needles (9 or 10s UK). The pattern also suggests that if the hat is for an adult female you use US 3 needles (3.25mm or 10UK) but for an adult male you use US 6 needles (4mm or 8 UK).
I used cheap and cheerful, 3 for the price of 2, Hobbycraft DK with 4mm/8 UK needles as I tend to knit on the tight side especially if I'm also watching the TV! I knitted the set for my son and the fit was fine - he didn't want to model it himself! However, with this pattern and the scarf pattern it is worth knitting a tension piece first.

Happy knitting!
The Scarf
The scarf is not for beginners! I chose it because I wanted to learn the 'double knitting technique' to create an extra thick scarf. There is also no instruction as such in the pattern, you have to work from three grids.
Double knitting allows you to create two layers of fabric at the same time, with only one pair of needles. The right sides of each layer face out, and the wrong sides face each other: stocking stitch on both sides! The finished fabric is entirely reversible, lending itself to colour work, contrasting fibres, or simply a finished piece that is twice as warm! Use two contrasting colours, and you can create a piece of knitting with one colour on each side and no “wrong side.”
YouTube have a number of double knitting technique tutorials but I liked the lady in this one!
I also found the link to the tutorial on the pattern didn't work!
I used 3.25mm/10 UK needles cast on 41 double stitches (82 stitches on the needle).
