6. Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication

Description: This is a lesson plan I used as a stand alone day of teaching. The lesson teaches spatial awareness by using an acronym for the word space in order to help students conceptualize the connection between where they are and their success in a game. 

Connection: This lesson connects to  performance indicators 6l and 6s. This lesson teaches content specifc vocabulay by asking questions and stimulating discussion. Spatial awareness is a key concept in PE but is best explained orally and in conjunction with a related activity. 

Explanation: This lesson helped me better understand how to connect PE and oral communication within the context of disciplinary language. PE often gets issolated and left out from other content areas, when in reality, PE in its best form supplements  and supports other disciplines. By combining vocabulary and oral communication, I was able to introduce a complicated skill like spatial awareness in just one class period.

Description: This is an infographic done by one of my students in sixth grade health. The assignment was done during a case study mini unit on whether there should be a ban or limit on the consumption of sugary drinks in America. 

Connection: The infographic assignment connects to performance indicators 6o and 6q in that it challenged my students to  analyze different sets of texts to determine whether the information was relevant to their side of the argument. The assignment also encouraged students to integrate their reading and writing skills with the content they learned in our Nutrition Unit about sugar.

Explanation: Helping my students gather the information necessary to complete their infographics challenged me to enhance how I facilitate the combination of my content area with skills like reading and writing. I learned that using other stratgies like partner reading and bubble maps enhanced both reading skills and the understanding of my own content.
