Alpha emitters packed in foil, this is a thermal image of it. I am not certain that the temperature difference there is because of the radiation sources. They are just not powerful enough. I let it sit for a long time to try to let its temperature stabilize but there could still have been residual heat from my hand in there. Or the office lights might warming its rough surface in a pattern like that. Hell, my breath could have done it! I could do a couple of control tests, but am feeling uninspired and lazy now.
I am a desktop physicist, loving learning the basics of the universe. Particle physics is possible to explore, in at least rough detail, on a poor mans budget. I try to use household items, and findings from yard sales and second hand shops. Physics has a poor public image, somehow as being clinical. But it is the study of the building blocks of everything, and why and how it all behaves as it does. And by extension then also extrapolate some of its future.
Setting up for an experiment of some sort or another.
That is cheese sitting next to a block of lead sitting on some Tungston. Eating Stilton while handling heavy metals . . . not smart.
