The 2020 NZOMO results have been released! Read more -->
There is a small cost, $15 NZD, to participating. This is because there are considerable costs associated with running the NZOMO. In particular, marking is very labour-intensive and time-consuming, with each student's responses taking up to half an hour to mark. A team of highly qualified and professional markers are paid fairly to do the marking. All of the markers are former IMO competitors* and/or have experience marking at the Auckland Mathematical Olympiad, New Zealand Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp, and/or similar mathematical Olympiads.
*This means they were good enough to go to the 'Maths Olympics', to which each country can only send 6 competitors.
All participating students will:
have their work marked by highly qualified and professional markers;
receive the number of marks they got for each problem, and total score;
receive a copy of the official solutions and commentary; and
receive a certificate (provided they submitted work).
We believe this delivers excellent value for students. There are few mathematical Olympiads open to everyone that provide such professional problem-by-problem marking. Instead, most mathematics competitions are multiple-choice and machine-marked. Even then, competitions such as ICAS, which is machine-marked, still charges $14.50+ AUD per test, and, as of recent years, students do not even get to see the questions afterwards. In comparison, the NZOMO gives students much more.
The NZOMO is not run for profit and does not expect to make a profit.
If we decide to run the NZOMO again in 2021, it will be announced on this website and we will aim to have registrations open for at least a month before the competition date.
