CSA stands for "Community Supported Agriculture". It is a system to connect consumers with local producers. In our case, a co-op is in contact with 120 local farms and distributes products to different pickup sites in NYC including the NYU-CSA pickup site at 100 Bleecker street.
More info here.
The NYU-CSA was founded in fall 2020 by Karin Morandell, a foodie NYU researcher with the support of the Office of Faculty Housing (special thanks to Erin Donnellly and Alex Juric). Since Summer 2022, NYU-CSA is now open to students as well (thanks to Jacqueline Moy, the Office of Sustainability and Prof. Jenny S. Martinez).
Eat fresh, healthy, and delicious vegetables. Your just-picked vegetables and fruits taste great and stay fresh longer while retaining more nutritional value.
Support the local economy. In these difficult times, you can make a difference by helping local farmers.
Save money. The shares are very reasonably priced compared to the supermarket products. Also, cooking is cheaper than ordering food.
Improvise with new ingredients. Get creative with unknown vegetables.
Help the planet. Eating seasonally reduces the transportation of produces across the country and packaging waste.
Know where your food comes from.
Stay healthy. Reduce the risk of exposing yourself to potential COVID contamination while enjoying organic and fresh food.
If members do not pick up their produce, we do our best to not waste them. We mostly donate the food to different organizations or gift them to NYU Housing staff whose support made this initiative possible.
If you are interested in receiving free food, Mondays after 6 PM, please contact nyucsa2020@gmail.com.
