Inn-to-inn walking can be done with a very light backpack. Ultralight (UL) gear makes walking more pleasant as well as safer, because a light backpack does not interfere with one's balance in tricky places. To keep down the weight, I also do not carry any paper maps or documents, relying instead on smartphone apps.
