To prepare for my long-distance walks, I try to walk at least 12 miles every day. Since I like trees, flowers, hills, and water, my daily walks include as many of these elements as I can find within 15 miles from my home in Inwood at the northern tip of Manhattan. Here are my favorite walks (in the order roughly N to S).
16 mi walk from MNR Hudson Line, Greystone, to subway A, Inwood 207th St. From Greystone station walk up to Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, follow that to Untermyer Gardens, tour the gardens and then walk via Lenoir Preserve and St Joseph's Cemetery to South County Trailway. Follow this S to Putnam Greenway, then Van Cortlandt Park Greenway, and finally quiet residential streets of Marble Hill, Bronx, over Broadway Bridge, to subway A, Inwood 207th St (NW entrance)
