Come ready to check out the amazing work of existing groups, brainstorm and workshop new ideas bubbling up from you + others in the Network, or just learn more about how these groups operate. Summer Rising 2022 Financial Assistance Grants
Thanks to a generous grant award from the Pinkerton Foundation, the NYC STEM Education Network is pleased to announce $20,000 in funding to support high-quality, enriching STEM experiences for young people at Summer Rising sites. Through this application process (application online here), the NYC STEM Education Network will award a limited set of grants prioritizing STEM learning experiences for youth underrepresented in the STEM fields and sites otherwise unable to provide STEM programming on-site due to staffing and financial constraints. Because grant funds are limited, awards will be capped at no more than $3,000 per STEM provider and no more than one award per Summer Rising site.
If you are a STEM provider applying for more than one potential partner, please complete one application for EACH Summer Rising site.
Funding will be prioritized for site/provider matches including NYC STEM Education Network members and originating at the STEM Network's STEM Provider Fair in late May. In an effort to meet the Network’s equity goals of increasing access to and participation in STEM learning opportunities for youth who are underrepresented in STEM and underserved, applications will be prioritized if the Summer Rising site:
1) Is at or above the citywide average for the Economic Need Index (70%).
2) Is at or above the citywide average for percentage of students identifying as Black (24.7%) and/or Hispanic/Latinx (40.8%).
3) Is not already partnering with a STEM service provider this summer or has limited staff capacity to deliver STEM programming with existing staff.
For Summer Rising sites that serve more than one school, data should be provided for the school with the most youth enrolled at the Summer Rising site (if known), or the school affiliated with the Principal in Charge.
As of July 1, additional funds remain and applications are being accepted on a rolling basis. Please reach out to Emma Banay (ebanay@expandedschools.org) with any questions.
Summer Rising 2022 Updates
A group of Network members and the Operations Working Group have been working to identify the ways that the Network can support Summer Rising. We have identified three primary ways:
Gather and distribute an updated summer program guide, highlighting summer offerings from Network members looking to partner or subcontract with Summer Rising sites. You may remember that we created a similar guide last summer. This year, the guide will be in Airtable and will be distributed by DYCD during the week of 5/9 to Summer Rising sites. Please complete the Airtable form if you want your organization’s programming to be included.
Host a virtual STEM provider fair where schools and CBOs can meet Network providers as they seek to identify subcontractors for Summer Rising. The Network will be hosting this virtual provider fair on Wednesday May 25th (time TBD). More details will be forthcoming, but if you want to participate, please complete the Airtable form. We will plan to hold a “provider orientation” on 5/17 at 2pm to prepare for the event; register here to attend the orientation.
Make and fund STEM provider and CBO matches for a subset for Summer Rising sites. The Network currently has a $20K grant submission to support this idea. If awarded, the Summer Rising planning group has decided to use the funds to support a subset of STEM provider “matches” with Summer Rising sites, identified through a group of CBO partners for this summer. If you are interested in being considered for these funded matches, please complete the Airtable form. If you'd like to be part of the group planning this, let me know and I'll add you to our planning meetings.
As always, summer is creeping up quickly. Please complete the Airtable form (if your organization has summer offerings) by Tuesday May 10th. DYCD plans to distribute this information between 5/11 and 5/13. Many thanks to all the Network members mobilizing quickly and thoughtfully to support providers and educators in Summer Rising this year!

Black Lives Matter Statement: Confronting Anti-Blackness and Systemic Injustices
The past week has been an immensely difficult one for our country and our city. Nationwide, protesters march against police brutality and the senseless murders of black people including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many countless others, amidst the backdrop of a pandemic that has claimed over 100,000 American lives and disproportionately impacted the black community. As a Network, we want to recognize the physical and emotional toll these events have had on us and our communities and to name anti-blackness and state-sanctioned violence as the root causes of these injustices.
Supporting equity and access in STEM education has been a central goal of the Network since its inception but it is important now to recognize our shortcomings and to strive towards a more just and equitable world for the black youth, families, and communities that we serve. As we confront these deep-rooted, systemic injustices, we are working to create spaces where we all can express our collective pain and outrage, and share ideas and resources specifically around supporting racial justice and fighting the systemic racism that pervades our educational system.
