If the future has yet to happen, it can then be designed... If it is to be designed, what is it to be designed into, and how will it be designed?
Design as we typically think of it, is a process of creative problem solving for existing problems. Anticipatory Design on the other hand is about envisioning, prototyping, and experiencing solutions to problems that have yet to be defined.
Through this course, participants will give form to the future through designed objects, enactments, and/or spaces of experience by engaging in the practices of both futuring and visioning such as; forecasting, and anticipating trends and systemic changes (Futuring), and imagining and prototyping a preferred future, or future outcomes (Visioning).
Course Format
This is a hybrid seminar/studio course that is in person course, and requires active participation in a team format. Class sessions will be comprised of lectures, in-class exercises, project assignments, presentations, critique sessions and class discussions.
Course Learning Objectives
Participants will gain a familiarization with various Futuring and Visioning methodologies, such as causal layered analysis, scenario building, etc
We will seek to spur innovation, to anticipate new and emerging needs, to explore what could be, to challenge conventional knowledge, to evoke new ideas, and to entice action!
