The North Valley Music Department is growing and constantly expanding. We currently offer the following opportunities. Check the online calendar for rehearsals and performances involving each ensemble. Every ensemble has a fair share of performances associated with them so we can provide the very best experiences for students regardless of what ensemble they are part of.
The Concert Band is the main wind instrument ensemble at North Valley comprised of all students in band, from freshmen to seniors. Students explore a wide variety of wind band literature as well as fine-tune skill sets through the development of fundamentals and overall individual technique. All woodwinds and brass enroll for this class. This ensemble performs at local concerts and 1-3 band festivals in the spring. This also makes up the winds section of the Marching Band and Basketball Band. Concert Band is a year-long class.
All percussionists, grades 9-12 enroll in this course. Students explore and perform a wide variety of wind band literature as the percussion section of the Concert Band as well as refining techniques over the year. This class also makes up the drumline of the Marching Band. Students develop beginning to advanced percussion techniques on all of the percussion instruments through a comprehensive curriculum. Percussion Ensemble is a year-long course.
Jazz Band is brand new to North Valley. After many years of the school not having jazz in our program, we are so excited it is back and being offered to our students. Jazz Band explores and performs jazz band literature. Entry into Jazz Band does require the student to be enrolled in Concert Band or Percussion Class. This ensemble performs at various local and regional jazz band festivals. Jazz Band is a year-long course, but schedules sometimes conflict with other required classes and have to be modified throughout the year.
The Ensemble Choir is North Valley's auditioned base class for any 10th-12th grade students. This group is for all intermediate to advanced choral students and students audition for this ensemble in the spring. Students explore a variety of choral literature as well as fine-tune skill sets through the development of fundamentals and overall individual technique. This ensemble performs at local concerts and 1-3 Choral festivals in the spring. Both choirs perform the national anthem at many home games and events over the year.
The Concert Choir is for all students at North Valley High School but is mostly comprised of 9th and 10th-grade choral students. This group is for all beginning choir students and well as returning students as well. The focus of this class is to develop the fundamentals and basic choral techniques but it's also about finding our voice and learning how to use it. Both choirs perform the national anthem at many home games and events over the year.
The marching band is one of the most visible ensembles at North Valley. The Marching Band is made up of all students in Concert Band and Percussion class. The Marching Band season starts in August, 2 weeks before classes begin, and finishes at the end of football season in October. Performances in the stands only may continue after the regular football season if the football team makes the playoffs. The Marching Band also performs in the local parades in May.
The Basketball Band is an ensemble similar to the Marching Band but only performs pep-band music in the stands at home basketball games from December through February. All instruments are welcome, but students must be enrolled in an appropriate ensemble during the school day.
