Your diet is a bank account. Good food choices are good investments
~Bethany Frankel
Body weight and weight loss are very personal topics. We often have complex relationships with food and our body weight. I invite you to have an open mind as you explore the dynamic, powerful and meaningful topics in this course.
In this class you will learn many things that can help a person to lose weight, maintain weight, or not gain weight. But it does not contain everything there is to know about this topic.
Be clear: This 1 unit course does NOT cover basic nutrition.
You will NOT learn what a healthy diet is in this course, or how to create a healthy diet for yourself. (You will learn that topic in a basic introductory nutrition course, like Nutrition 10 Contemporary Nutrition at DeAnza college.)
Below is a short, fun and informative videos to whet your appetite for learning about dieting.
Watching is totally optional.
How This Course Works
(More information is found in the next section of this syllabus Course Essentials)
An Overview
This 8 week course is organized into 8 Weekly Modules. Each Week's Module begins on a Monday and ends on the following Sunday night.
This is a fully online course. It resides on the course management system, Canvas. There are no class meetings or lectures to attend
The course officially begins Monday May 6. However, it will open 4 weeks early, on the first day of Spring quarter (April 8). It ends Wednesday June 27
If you register for this class before May 6, you'll be able to get a head start and read some of the course content BEFORE the official first day. That is a GREAT idea -- it will reduce the time and work to do during the official 8 weeks of this course
This is not a self-paced course

Anna's Tips for Success in Nutrition 62G
- Have Realistic Expectations
Expect to spend on average ~3 hours a week on this course . It takes time (and patience) to learn
The quarter is VERY short -- It goes by fast. If you start this course on the official start day, know that the 8 weeks go by VERY quickly. You'll need to jump right in and get started in the first week. You won't have the luxury to ease into the course.
But...if you start the course early, you WILL be able to ease into it and that will make those 8 weeks less intense :-)
- Get Organized with your Time
Create a routine and schedule for yourself: Set aside a chunk of time on specific days of the week at specific times to dedicate solely to this course.
- Be Proactive
Strive to stay on top of Nutrition 62G from Week1
Log onto the course every Monday. Start on the Homepage. This is a great place to get a quick snapshot of what's going on in Nutrition 62G. (Starting in Week 2 of the official 8 week quarter, each Monday there will be a new Homepage with useful information for the week ahead)
Then, click on "Modules", which gives you a Table of Contents for the course. Go to the current week's Module. This will have all you need for that week. FYI: In Week 1 you'll first go to the Orientation Module and then progress to Week 1 Module.
Put the quiz close dates and the due date for the one small assignment onto your personal calendar
Ask Questions whenever something is not clear
- Use Anna's Bi-weekly TO DO Lists
Every Friday and Monday you will receive an announcement with a weekend or week's TO DO list. Use them to help you stay on task. But these lists are very short since this is only a 1 unit course!
- Read ALL of the Anna's Announcements
Lots of useful, important and valuable information is communicated in them. Read them; don't skim !
- Save the Syllabus onto your desktop
(or print the pdf version and keep it handy)
Refer to it regularly to answer questions you may have
- Be Active on Pronto
Download the Pronto app on your phone so you will see last minute reminders and announcements without logging onto Canvas. And read what your classmates ask and the answers posted.
- Turn on the Canvas Notifications for Submission Comments and Conversation Message
Set your Preferences on Canvas to turn on at least some e-mail or push Notifications on Canvas. Selecting Submission Comments means you will be notified as soon as a comment has been left for you (for example, with a score or grade). Sometimes a comment will be telling you that further action needs to be taken. That is information you need to know ASAP. Selecting Conversation Message means you will be notified when you have a message in your Inbox.
Yes, you might find yourself confused, but help IS here!
How to Get your Questions Answered
Post your Questions on Canvas or Pronto
Pronto is an online messaging tool that we will be using in this class. Post your question in a Chat on Pronto. The is the BEST place to ask questions.
The Canvas Discussion called Have a Question? Ask it HERE is located in various places on Canvas (on the NUTR 62G Homepage, in the module Your Course Toolkit, in the Orientation Module)
Ask ALL questions about the course content, quizzes, exams, the diet assignment, nutrition, etc. on one of those places.
Message me Only For private questions
You can message me through:
A Direct Message through Pronto (Preferred method)
E-mail: milleranna@fhda.edu. Please write "NUTR62G" in the subject line
The Canvas Inbox
I usually reply within 24 hours (on Pronto, often within the hour)
Please do NOT message me with questions about the course content, quizzes, diets, etc. Those questions should be asked in a chat on Pronto or in the Canvas Discussion Have a Question? Ask it HERE
Here's How You Can Reach Me
Zoom Office Hours

Direct Message me
I can be reached on Pronto, via e-mail: milleranna@fhda.edu or by using the Canvas Inbox. (I prefer that you message me on Pronto)
Please ONLY direct message me for private, personal questions. Questions about the course and nutrition should ONLY be posted in a Pronto Chat or on Canvas in the Have a Question? Discussion.
