Eat Right Philly would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year! As we reflect on the past year and create resolutions for the new year, let's refresh ourselves on the importance of mindfulness.
Remember, mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings. Previously we discussed how to incorporate mindfulness into our eating habits. We learned about how easy it is to become distracted by work, electronics, or even our own thoughts. Taking time to slow down and enjoy your food, think about how different foods make you feel, and enjoying quality time and conversations with others are great ways to practice mindful eating.
While creating your resolution, practice mindfulness, take a step back, reflect on yourself, and think of one particular thing you want to achieve this year. One way to mindfully create a strong goal or resolution is to create a SMART Goal/resolution.
Specific: a goal is easier to visualize and achieve when it is specific.
Measurable: how will you track your progress? Daily, Weekly?
Attainable: within reach
Relevant: easily connected to your mission or interests, what goal fits your current lifestyle
Timely: focus on giving yourself a specific direction, I will eat breakfast 3 days a week
Share your goal with your personal group, having a support system can help to encourage you when you are struggling with your goal/resolution. Be patient, be kind with yourself, and practice mindfulness while working on your New Years resolution.
