Happy National Nutrition Month®, a campaign by The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics which encourages everyone to learn about food choices and healthy habits. This year's theme, “Beyond the Table,” encourages us to focus on farm-to-fork nutrition from considering food production, distribution, food shopping and food safety. It also describes how we eat, where we eat, and the foods we choose. The theme also looks at food sustainability and food waste. By being mindful about where our food comes from, what and where we choose to eat, and how best to use the food we have, we can nourish our bodies while positively impacting our entire food system as well. Here are some tips to help you think “beyond the table”:
Tip 1 – Stay nourished on a budget
Check out your local stores sales
Don’t forget about farmers markets
Map out your meals and create a grocery list
Utilize Be Healthy PA - Food Banks Archives for local food assistance
Tip 2 – Eat a variety of foods
Purchase produce in-season; it will be fresher and often cheaper!
Canned, frozen, and dried fruits and vegetables are also great options to add to a meal!
Tip 3 – Eat with the environment in mind
Plan meals around foods you already have and get creative with your leftovers!
Try incorporating plant-based proteins into your diet! Beans, peas, and tofu are a great way to start
Do you have access to a sunny space or an outdoors area? Try growing some food on your own, or in a community garden!
Celebrate nutrition all year long! Encourage one another to engage in healthy eating and physical activity habits year-round!
