As the holiday season approaches, you may be faced with the challenge of preparing food for more people while trying to keep your spending in check. These tips will show you how to ring in the holidays without exceeding your budget.
Buy Seasonal – fruits and vegetables that are in season and grown in your area are easier to find and less expensive too. Currently, in-season produce includes sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, winter squash, parsnips, onions, citrus fruits, pears and more!
Visit the Frozen Aisle – frozen vegetables and fruits are just as nutritious as fresh vegetables! To reduce the amount of added sugar and salt, purchase vegetables that are not in sauces, use the nutrition facts label or ingredients list to check.
Canned Goods – canned vegetables and fruits can be a great source of dietary fiber and other beneficial vitamins and minerals. Choose vegetables that are low in sodium or sodium free, and fruits packed in water or 100% fruit juice. Draining and rinsing these items can help to remove excess sodium and sugars as well.
Buy in Bulk – it is almost always cheaper to buy in bulk but be mindful about how much of an ingredient you can utilize. Careful meal planning, freezing, and splitting bulk purchases with friends or family can help you save money and prevent food waste.
